Oct. 23 (UPI) -- The NCAA has adopted a rule change to allow student athletes and athletic department staff to bet on professional sports.

The new rule, applying to any sports betting activities, is to go into effect Nov. 1, after Division II and Division III approve the measures Wednesday. Division I approved the plan on Oct. 8.

The ruling does not affect the NCAA prohibition on betting on college sports and the ban on sharing information about college competitions with other bettors, both of which remain in place.

"Our focus remains on education and harm reduction," Jason Verdugo, chair of the Division II Management Council said in a statement Thursday.
