WASHINGTON – Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will announce sometime after Nov. 4 whether she plans to run for reelection, her office confirmed to HuffPost.

That’s the day California voters will decide whether to pass Proposition 50, a statewide redistricting measure that Democrats are pushing as a counter to Republican gerrymandering in Republican-led states.

“Speaker Pelosi is fully focused on her mission to win the Yes on 50 special election in California on November 4th,” Pelosi spokesman Ian Krager said in a statement. “She urges all Californians to join in that mission on the path to Democrats taking back the House.”

Pelosi, who has served in Congress since 1987 and was House speaker for eight years, has been at the center of wild speculation about her retirement plans as the years have rolled by. She’s now 85, and a Politico report is adding fresh rumors about her potential successor being San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan.

At the same time, the California Democrat remains a powerful figure in her party and has proven every two years that she’s not stepping aside on anyone else’s terms. She did, however, relinquish her leadership post in 2023.
