A Democratic candidate for the US Senate in Maine has apologised after a tattoo on his chest resembling a Nazi symbol sparked backlash, saying he will have it removed.
Graham Platner, a 41-year-old Marine Corps combat veteran and oyster farmer, said that he was unaware that the skull-and-crossbones tattoo resembled Nazi imagery.
The tattoo was visible in a video posted on social media showing Platner dancing in his underwear at his brother's wedding.
"The absurdity here is that I've lived my entire life with this thing, and it's never come up, including in front of all of my Jewish friends and family," he said in an interview. "I have legitimately dedicated much of my life to antifascism."
His former political director, Genevieve McDonald, who resigned from his campaign last week, called the tattoo antisemitic.
