LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Maika Monroe say their new version of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, premiering Wednesday on Hulu, proved to be much different from the 1992 original. The pair play brand new characters in the film written by Micah Bloomberg and directed by Michelle Garza Cervera.

In a recent Zoom interview with UPI, the actors shared how it was freeing to not be cast as Claire (Annabella Sciorra) and Peyton (Rebecca De Mornay) from the original movie. Winstead, 40, instead plays Caitlin, a new mom who works as a lawyer representing tenants/renters.

"It validated for me this is a whole different story," Winstead said. "It helped me not have to think about another film and just start from scratch on creating this character, which is a bit liberating to just be able to step aside and do our own thing."

Monroe, 32, plays Polly, a renter Caitlin tried to help pro bono. When they meet again, Polly is homeless so Caitlin hires her to be a nanny.

Polly has ulterior motives and the audience sees her sabotage Caitlin's life before Caitlin realizes it. Polly's motives are not uncovered until later in the movie.
