Oct. 20 (UPI) -- The White House began demolishing the East Wing to make room for President Donald Trump's $250 million ballroom on Monday.

Images posted online by both critics and supporters of the American president show an excavator tearing down the exterior of the East Wing.

"For more than 150 years, every President has dreamt about having a Ballroom at the White House to accommodate people for grand parties, State Visits, etc." Trump said in a statement on his Truth Social platform, announcing that "ground has been broken on the White House grounds to build the new, big beautiful White House Ballroom."

"I am honored to be the first President to finally get this much-needed project underway -- with zero cost to the American Taxpayer!"
