American actor and playwright Colman Domingo has been cast as the Cowardly Lion in the upcoming Wicked: For Good film, putting to rest a weekend of internet speculation on who would play the role.
The announcement was made by the film's official Instagram account, which posted a video on Monday of Mr Domingo surrounded by lion-shaped plush toys. The clip ends with him saying: "See you in Oz."
Jon M Chu, the director for the highly-anticipated sequel film adaptation for the hit Broadway musical, teased the news on Thursday by saying a major Hollywood star will voice the part.
Domingo joins an already star-studded cast that includes Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba.
The film also stars Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.
