Prioritising precautions is key to celebrating a safe Deepavali. Putting safety first and being careful will go a long way in preventing firecracker injuries and other health hazards, said doctors.

M. Kavitha, dean of Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where a 20-bed special burns ward has been set up ahead of Deepavali, stressed the need to burst firecrackers in open spaces. “People residing in apartments should not burst crackers on the terraces or common areas but in open spaces. A bucket of water and a bucket of sand should be kept nearby, while children must be allowed to light crackers only under adult guidance,” she said.

“Do not light crackers on your hands. Take all precautions to have a safe festival. In case of burn injuries, wash the area with water and seek medical help immediately,” she added.

Most firework injuries that occur during this season have a direct impact on eyes, said S. Soundari, Regional Head, Clinical Services, Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital, Chennai. “A large number of ocular injuries are reported every year, mainly caused due to firecrackers. In fact, our eyes are the second most common affected area after the hands and fingers,” she noted.

Along with individuals who handle firecrackers, more than 50% of bystanders are also at a higher risk of sustaining eye injuries, she said. The severity of ocular injury can range from mild irritation and corneal abrasions to retinal complications and open globe injury leading to potential blindness, she added.
