The Ernakulam Rural police have registered a total of 3,209 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the first nine months of this year. It marks a significant rise in such cases from a total of 2,037 registered last year. As many as 3,397 people were arrested in cases registered this year, while 2,217 were held last year, according to data shared by the police.

Of the 3,209 cases registered this year, 18 are related to seizure of narcotic items in commercial quantity, which varies according to the nature of the substance.

‘Ganja’ flow continues

A total of 475 kg of suspected ganja was seized this year. It is almost double the quantity of the substance seized last year overall. The figure stood at 275 kg last year.

The police also seized nearly 1 kg of suspected MDMA till September this year, as against 750 grams confiscated last year. The seized quantity includes 200 grams each seized from Angamaly in two separate incidents. The other major synthetic drugs seized include 142 grams of methamphetamine, around 2 kg of hashish oil, and 600 grams of heroin.
