The Trump administration is reportedly considering making changes at the division of the IRS dedicated to conducting criminal investigations, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, which could make it easier for the administration to use the division’s broad powers to investigate alleged financial crimes to go after the president’s political opponents.
Citing anonymous sources, the Journal reported the Trump administration wants to make “sweeping changes” to the IRS Criminal-Investivative Division, known as IRS-CI, in order to make it easier to pursue investigations against left-wing groups.
The reported changes come amid the Trump administration’s broader efforts in recent weeks to more aggressively pursue President Donald Trump’s political enemies, as the administration has brought criminal charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, and reportedly is in the process of trying to imminently indict former National Security Advisor John Bolton.
