Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The three candidates for New York City mayor -- Andrew Cuomo, Zonhran Mamdani and Curtis Silwa -- are expected to face each other Thursday night in the first of two general election debates.

The debate is set to take place at 7 p.m. EDT at 30 Rock studios in Manhattan, and is being hosted by WNBC-TV, New York City; WNJU-TV, New York City; and Politico.

The debate comes weeks after Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced he would not seek re-election in the wake of a federal bribery indictment and the Campaign Finance Board's decision to withhold millions in public matching funds. Adams has not endorsed one of his fellow candidates, though fellow Democrat Cuomo saw a small gain in the polls after his departure, The Hill reported.

Mamdani, a Democratic representative in New York's Assembly, has a comfortable lead in the polls, and Republican Silwa trails behind both of the other two candidates.

Cuomo served 10 years as governor of New York, resigning in 2021 after facing multiple allegations of sexual harassment. He lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani and is running in the race as an independent.
