Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., announced Wednesday that he will run against incumbent Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., in a primary battle that will likely focus on age.

Moulton, 46, will run against Markey, 80, in 2026.

"We're in crisis, and with everything we learned last election, I just don't believe Sen. Markey should be running for another six-year term at 80 years old," Moulton said in a video announcement. "Even more, I don't think someone who's been in Congress for a half century is the right person to meet this moment and win the future. Sen. Markey is a good man, but it's time for a new generation of leadership, and that's why I'm running for U.S. Senate."

Moulton said key issues he would focus on are the affordability crisis, universal health care, banning assault weapons, fighting climate change and protecting democracy.

Moulton was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2014 and unseated incumbent Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass. In 2018, he tried to block Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., from becoming Speaker of the House.
