The newly appointed Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president, Rao Narender Singh, a Backward Class leader, feels that the absence of a full organisational structure for a long time worked to the party’s detriment during last year’s Assembly election. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Narender Singh said strengthening the organisation in the State and expanding it to the booth and village levels were his priorities.
The Congress leader, who took over the party’s reins a little over a week ago, said the electorate in Haryana had made up its mind to vote the Congress to power in the Assembly election in October last year. However, the BJP hatched a “conspiracy to steal the mandate”.
“Our party is now working seriously on addressing structural shortcomings. Two months ago, it appointed district presidents as part of the ‘Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan’, based not on recommendations but on an internal survey,” said the three-time MLA.
A former Health Minister, Mr. Narender Singh won his first Assembly election in 1996 on the Congress symbol and again in 2000. In 2009, he contested and won on the Haryana Janhit Congress ticket but returned to the Congress soon after and was made a Minister in the government led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
