South Asian University (SAU) students boycotted classes on Wednesday demanding the suspension of two hostel staffers for “negligence” and swift justice for a first-year student allegedly sexually assaulted by four men on the Chhatarpur campus on Sunday evening.
Though the FIR was registered on Monday, no arrests have been made. Police confirmed that one of the accused was a security guard. “The investigation is ongoing. We are gathering CCTV footage and recording statements of guards, caretakers, and others on campus,” a senior police officer said.
‘Tried to suppress case’
The students are demanding the suspension of the hostel’s warden and supervisor. “Most departments boycotted classes today. We want the culprits identified quickly. The hostel staffers should be suspended for victim-blaming and trying to suppress the case,” a protesting student said on condition of anonymity.
The university said the survivor is now in the custody of her parents, and it is probing the allegations of negligence by the staffers. “The university has formed a standing committee, a majority of whose members are lady officials, to investigate allegations of sexual assault. SAU has constituted another committee to investigate alleged insensitive responses by the university officials,” the university said in a statement.
