President Donald Trump made things weird with Italy’s top politician during a peace summit in Egypt on Monday.
Though the president was there to sign a freshly-brokered deal to end the war in Gaza, he couldn’t help but veer into shallow territory as he addressed one of the few female leaders in the room: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
While Meloni stood behind him next to the U.K.’s Keir Starmer and Canada’s Mark Carney, Trump said, “We have a woman, a young woman, who’s uh... I’m not allowed to say it because usually it’s the end of your political career if you say it. She’s a beautiful young woman.”
“Now, if you use the word ‘beautiful’ in the United States about a woman, that’s the end of your political career,” he complained. “But I’ll take my chances.”
Trump then turned around to Meloni and asked, “You don’t mind being called beautiful, right? Because you are.”
