Chennai Metrowater will deploy additional sewer lorries and dewatering pumpsets to manage the expected surge in sewage load during the upcoming northeast monsoon. The water agency has also expedited desilting of the sewer network.

To ensure uninterrupted operation of 394 sewage pumping stations, Metrowater has raised key infrastructure, including panel boards, above the maximum flood level.

About 100 sewer lorries from other districts, including Cuddalore, Villupuram and Tiruvannamalai, will be hired to clear waterlogging and handle sewage load, in addition to deploying 506 dewatering pumpsets.

Normally, the water agency treats 665 million litres of sewage daily. During rainy days, the load rises by nearly 40% than the normal pumping capacity. Last year, it treated 2,616.28 million litres of sewage in three days since October 16.
