The chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee insists that the decision to award this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was not a deliberate snub of U.S. President Donald Trump.Trump has been openly lobbying for the award since his first term in office, praising his own supposed actions as a peacemaker and arguing he should have won “four or five” of the prizes already.Friday’s announcement of Machado’s win not only caused the White House to whine and MAGA to have a meltdown, but Nobel Committee ChairJørgen Watne Frydnes was forced to explain how the decision was made.It all started when a reporter asked Frydnes if Trump’s constant lobbying for the award and his insistence that it would “be an insult to the United States if he doesn’t get it” affected the committee’s deliberation and thinking.Frydnes insisted there was only one person who really affected the deliberation, and it was the guy who founded the prize: Alfred Nobel.“In the long history of the Nobel Peace Prize, I think this committee has seen many types of campaign, media attention. We receive thousands and thousands of letters every year of people wanting to say what, for them, leads to peace,” he said. “This committee sits in a room filled with the portraits of all laureates and that room is filled with both courage and integrity. So we base only our decision on the work and the will of Alfred Nobel.”You can watch the complete announcement of Machado’s win below.Close
