Officials are warning the public to avoid the area after an explosion occurred at an explosive manufacturing plant in Tennessee, killing an unknown number of people.

The Hickman County Sheriff's Office confirmed in a social media post on Friday, Oct. 10, that the incident occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems in the Bucksnort area. The plant is about 60 miles west of Nashville.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said several people were unaccounted for and some have died, according to The Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network. He called the explosion that occurred at 7:45 a.m. on Oct. 10. a “very devastating blast."

Davis added that the scene was secure, but cautioned that small explosions around the scene remain possible. He said no more massive explosions are expected.

Soon after the explosion, the sheriff's office announced that emergency services were currently on the scene working to address the situation. In the meantime, the department has asked people to "please avoid the area to allow emergency responders to do their work."
