Nicole Kidman asked a question that has now taken on a different meaning in the wake of her split from Keith Urban.

Reports in late September revealed that the longtime couple were separating after nearly 20 years of marriage. Kidman officially filed for divorce after the news broke.

In a cover story interview for Vogue’s November issue, conducted weeks before the shocking news, writer Wendell Steavenson asked Kidman “how she felt now, in her 50s.”

Steavenson said she “had expected to hear a nice trite response about the sagacity of age,” but what she got was an actor who was “was wry, rueful, unsure of herself.”

Kidman responded with a question of her own, asking: “How many times do you have to be taught that you think you know where your life is going and then it isn’t going in that direction?”
