Trump is deepening US security, diplomatic, energy and investment ties with Gulf states. Amid serious questions in the Gulf about US reliability after Israel’s unprecedented air strike in Doha last month, the US president made a Nato-style security pledge to Qatar on Sep. 29 in an executive order. While not an ironclad, Senate-ratified treaty, it upgrades the US security commitment to Qatar, home to the US military’s Central Command, promising “diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military” measures to defend Qatar in the event of another attack. The US may no longer need Gulf oil, but Trump’s actions point to how profoundly important the region remains to the US.
