The long-buried remains of a ‘fiery preacher’ have halted plans to revamp a historic church where the late Queen once worshipped.

B-listed Braemar Kirk, in Royal Deeside, was sold last year to a millionaire couple who want to rip out its old pipework and seating platform to make the space more flexible.

Archaeologists fear the move could disturb the Reverend Hugh Cobban’s final resting place behind the pulpit.

Iwan and Manuela Wirth, the Swiss owners of hospitality company Artfirm, bought the parish church after it was marketed by the Church of Scotland for £160,000.

They hope to breathe life into the place of worship, which has been a feature of the village for 155 years.
