KOZHIKODEThe district-level advisory committee for the Food Safety department has said that ‘sugar boards’ have been installed in 160 schools across Kozhikode.The initiative is part of an ongoing health awareness programme aimed at drastically reducing excessive sugar consumption among students and combating the rising threat of lifestyle diseases such as childhood diabetes, a press release said.A meeting of the committee, presided over by the Assistant Collector Dr. S. Mohanapriya, reviewed the progress of other health and food safety projects in the district. They include the ‘Safe and Nutritious Food (SNF) at School’ scheme being implemented in 30 schools, ‘Eat Right School’ scheme active in 26 schools, and the ‘Hygiene Rating’ programme under way at 520 food establishments.At the meeting, Food Safety officials provided key figures regarding inspections and regulatory work done between April and June. A total of 1,553 food safety licences and 5,983 registrations were granted in the district. Besides, 1,606 inspections were carried out during the period.A total of 1,099 samples (473 statutory samples and 626 surveillance samples) were collected and tested. Based on the sample reports, 37 cases were filed. It was found that 106 establishments had minor violations and notices were issued to them for improvement. Nearly 50 establishments were penalised for major violations, and a total of ₹2.04 lakh was collected from them. Published - October 08, 2025 09:02 pm IST
