California governor candidate Katie Porter’s behavior in a recent interview prompted one of her opponents to accuse her of mistreating the press. (Watch the video below.)Porter, a former Democratic House member, is one of the front-runners to replace current Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) in the 2026 election. However, she did herself no favors in a conversation with California-based CBS reporter Julie Watts, which featured Porter at one point nearly walking out.“What do you say to the 40% of California voters, who you’ll need in order to win, who voted for Trump?” Watts asked in a clip shared by Axios’ Alex Thompson on Tuesday.“How would I need them in order to win, ma’am?” Porter replied before explaining she wouldn’t require GOP votes in a general election against a Republican in the Democrat-heavy state.Watts then raised the possibility of another Democratic candidate getting in her way.“I don’t intend that to be the case,” Porter responded, later touting her ability to win Republican votes. However, Watts reminded Porter that she previously said she didn’t need “those Trump voters.” To which Porter said, “Well, you asked me if I needed them to win. I feel like this is unnecessarily argumentative. What is your question?”Watts then stated that she asked every candidate the same question.“I don’t want to keep doing this. I’m going to call it. Thank you,” Porter said as she appeared to gesture to her microphone.“You’re not gonna do the interview with us?” Watts asked.“No, not like this. I’m not, not with seven follow-ups to every single question you ask,” Porter responded.“Every candidate has answered ...” Watts began.“I don’t care, I don’t care,” Porter shot back. This screenshot from a taped CBS interview shows California governor candidate Katie Porter and California-based CBS reporter Julie Watts.CBS NewsThe candidate complained that the follow-ups wouldn’t allow her to address all the listed issues.“I am an investigative reporter,” Watts said.“I have never had to do this before. Ever,” Porter replied.Watts said it was her job to ask follow-up questions, but Porter didn’t have to answer them.“I don’t wanna have an unhappy experience with you,” Porter said. “And I don’t want this all on camera.”Some of her opponents jumped on the contentious interview.“No candidate for governor should hide from the press or mistreat them — we owe it to the public to be transparent,” Democrat Tony Thurmond said, per Politico.“We need a governor who will work to solve hard problems and who is not afraid to answer simple questions,” a spokesperson for Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa said.Despite the drama, Porter did not walk out, and the interview continued for another 20 minutes, Politico reported. On top of her tense interview with Watts, on Wednesday, Politico obtained a recorded video of Porter telling a staffer to “get out of her fucking shot” during an interview. The interview was recorded in July 2021 with then-U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. While Porter, who was a member of the House at the time, is answering a question about electric vehicles, a staffer walks into the shot in the background. That’s when Porter erupts. The final edited version did not include the tense interaction, according to Politico. Porter said in a statement on Wednesday that she’s trying to do better.“It’s no secret I hold myself and my staff to a high standard, and that was especially true as a member of Congress,” Porter told Politico in a statement. “I have sought to be more intentional in showing gratitude to my staff for their important work.”USA Today noted that Porter’s stint in Congress was “plagued by a sometimes tense relationship with Democratic leadership, allegations of staff mistreatment and past claims of domestic abuse by her ex-husband.”She was also known for her whiteboard presentations to put CEOs and other powerful figures in the hot seat during congressional hearings. The California primary is in June.Katie Porter, pictured speaking at a candidate forum last month in Los Angeles, got in a tense back-and-forth with a reporter that has recently gone viral.Carlin Stiehl via Getty Images
