The generational war within the Democratic Party is coming to the South.State Rep. Justin Pearson, who became a national figure in 2023 after Tennessee Republicans successfully ousted him from office following a gun control protest, announced Wednesday he is challenging Rep. Steve Cohen, a 76-year-old who has held a Memphis-based district for nearly two decades.Pearson, who is just 30 years old, announced his bid with a statement framing the race in explicitly generational terms. “We can’t afford more of the same,” Pearson said. “It’s time for a new vision — one that matches the scale of our challenges with the urgency our people deserve.”The race between Pearson and Cohen, a fiery progressive who is one of just two non-Black politicians to hold a congressional seat where the population is majority Black, is likely to become one of the signature fights in a burgeoning generational conflict within the Democratic Party, sparked in large part by the political failure of former President Joe Biden, who left office at 82 years old.Pearson earned day-one endorsements from Justice Democrats, the progressive group who helped Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and other members of the squad win office, and from Leaders We Deserve, a group founded by activist David Hogg to back young candidates for office. Leaders We Deserve also pledged to spend $1 million in the Democratic primary.“Justin J. Pearson has repeatedly shown the kind of backbone needed to confront powerful special interests, from big oil to the gun lobby,” Hogg said when announcing the endorsement. “Memphis deserves a next-generation leader like Justin — a tested fighter who will deliver opportunity, affordability, safety and justice to his constituents.”We're so proud to announce our latest candidate this cycle: @Justinjpearson in #TN09!As Memphis is terrorized by Trump's masked agents & poisoned by Elon Musk's xAI plant, they need leaders that will actually fight back, protect them & deliver the prosperity they were promised. pic.twitter.com/7KKXFjUJLf— Justice Democrats (@justicedems) October 8, 2025The seat, which includes most of the city of Memphis and parts of its suburbs, is safely Democratic, with then-Vice President Kamala Harris earning a whopping 70% of the vote there in 2024. It is the only Democratic-held seat in Tennessee. Cohen’s status as a white man representing a majority-Black seat meant he drew two significant primary challenges early in his tenure: He defeated former congressional aide Nikki Tinker in 2008 and former Memphis Mayor W. W. Herenton in 2010. But in the decade since, he has typically cruised to reelection with little challenge.Rep. Steve Cohen is one of just two non-Black members of Congress who represent a majority-Black district.via Associated PressPearson briefly became a national figure in 2023 following a mass shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, when he and two colleagues ― Justin Jones and Gloria Johnson ― joined a protest supporting gun control at the state capitol. Republicans in the state legislature voted to expel both Jones and Pearson, who are Black, from the legislature, while Johnson held onto her seat by a single vote. The Shelby County Commission quickly reappointed Pearson to his job, and he won a subsequent special election and then a full term in 2024. While Pearson unveiled a progressive platform, including support for Medicare for All and gun control, his race against Cohen is likely to focus as much on style than ideological substance. Pearson has been active in fights against pipeline construction and an AI data center in Memphis, while Justice Democrats are prepared to attack Cohen as an “average absentee Congressman” who takes corporate PAC money.Support for Israel, which has become one of the defining ideological splits in the Democratic Party, could also come into play. Cohen, who is Jewish, has been a longtime supporter of aid to the country though he has also been harshly critical of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Pearson, like most other progressives, has called Israel’s war in Gaza a genocide.
