California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is gleefully poking holes in House Speaker Mike Johnson’s boasts of Republican transparency in government. On Monday, Newsom’s press office shared a video on X of Johnson speaking to reporters amid the government shutdown, now in its second week.“When the simple truth is on your side, you have nothing to hide from,” Johnson proclaims in the 53-second clip, shortly before blaming the shutdown on Democrats. “Then why are you hiding the Epstein list?” Newsom’s press office fired back. President Donald Trump’s administration has been heavily criticized by both Democrats and Republicans for its apparent refusal to make the Justice Department’s investigatory files on Jeffrey Epstein public. Though Trump has not been accused of any wrongdoing, his relationship with Epstein ― the disgraced financier who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking underage girls ― has been under renewed scrutiny in recent months. The decision by Johnson (R-La.) to keep the House of Representatives out of session during the government shutdown has effectively delayed the vote on the Epstein files.Last month, FBI Director Kash Patel sparred with lawmakers over his handling of the documents during a roughly five-hour testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. At one point, he dodged California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell’s questions about the Trump administration’s lack of transparency by reciting his ABCs.Close
