The heartbroken family of a soldier who fell to his death from a 15th-floor balcony have said they are still searching for answers after his inquest failed to conclude if his death was an accident. Lance Bombardier Ryan Seal fell from the apartment balcony in Southampton, Hampshire, on March 29, 2024. At the time, the 27-year-old had been signed off from work while recovering from foot surgery Although usually based in Portsmouth, he was staying with fellow soldier Archie Bennett, who told the hearing they had been out together earlier that day.Mr Bennett said he later heard his friend on the phone before suddenly falling silent. When he went to check on him, he couldn’t find him in his room, and discovered him only after stepping onto the balcony. L/Bdr Seal, who served in the Royal Artillery, was described by his family as an 'incredibly strong young man' whose 'unexpected' death left the family desperate for answers. His step-sister Steph Addison said: 'What happened was so unexpected and having to move on and just accept it is extremely hard with no answers, but knowing there may never be any answers.' Mr Bennet told Winchester Coroners' Court he heard his flatmate on the phone talking about work keys, which he he still had old keys he needed to return. I knew he hadn't left the flat, so I went out onto the balcony, and I saw his phone outside.'I then looked over the balcony, which is when I saw Ryan.'Mr Bennett said it was unusual for either of them to close the balcony door as they'd usually keep it open, even when smoking. He added: 'When we went out for a smoke, we both leaned against the railing, but we never sat on it.'L/Bdr Seal had recently had an argument with his girlfriend about their relationship, but Mr Bennett said his flatmate 'knew he would move past it and come out the other side'.Detective Sergeant Anton Gate was called to the scene after members of the public discovered L/Bdr Seal's body and called the police. He said that intermittent rain throughout the day led him to investigate the glass panes of the balcony, where he found smudging that might suggest someone had lowered themself off the balcony. He said: 'When we shone a light on the middle pane, you could clearly see raindrops on the inner side but on the outside, there was a smudged marking there, like someone had potentially lowered themselves over the balcony.'He added that anti-slip paint 'made it less likely to be an accident as you would not have slipped on that floor'.L/Bdr Seal's medical cause of death was recorded as multiple fatal injuries.Assistant coroner Kiran Chahal-Musgrave found L/Bdr Seal did not suffer from any mental health issues and a toxicology report found no drugs or alcohol in his system. She said: 'I cannot be satisfied that this was an accident, or indeed a misadventure, and therefore I reach a narrative conclusion in this case.'How he went over the balcony is unclear.' Detective Sergeant Anton Gate was called to the scene after members of the public discovered L/Bdr Seal's body and called the police. Rest easy, Massive. We love you.'
