The Supreme Court on Tuesday (October 7, 2025) indicated that Nithari killings convict Surendra Koli may soon be acquitted in the only case in which his conviction still stands. The court observed that it would amount to a “travesty of justice” to uphold the 2011 verdict when Mr. Koli had already been exonerated in 12 other cases arising from the same set of facts and evidence.

While reserving its verdict on Mr. Koli’s curative petition, a Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai and Justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath said, “This matter deserves to be allowed in a minute.”
