One of Emmanuel Macron's former prime ministers has called for an early presidential election after the latest French PM resigned following just 27 days in office.
Former French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said on Tuesday that he was in favour of an early presidential election, as the country is plunged further into crisis.
Philippe, once a close ally of President Emmanuel Macron, hit out at what he called a 'distressing political game' in an interview with radio station RTL, following the Monday resignation of outgoing Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, whose government was rejected by both allies and opponents.
His comments were echoed by Jordan Bardella, the leader of the far-right party National Rally, who said in a separate interview on BFM TV that he supported first a dissolution of the parliament, followed by parliamentary elections or early presidential elections.
Philippe, a former member of the conservative Les Républicains party, served as the first prime minister in Macron's first term, between 2017 and 2020.
