K.K. Harshina, an alleged victim of a “botched” surgery at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, is planning to stage a ‘satyagraha’ outside the State Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram on October 8.

She is seeking the appointment of a special prosecutor in a medical negligence case pending in the court related to the incident and financial help for continuing her medical treatment. A surgical instrument was reportedly left inside Ms. Harshina’s stomach during a C-Section surgery held at the hospital in 2017. It was removed through another surgery only in 2022, that too after she went through a considerable amount of pain, Dinesh Perumanna and Musthafa Palazhi, functionaries of the Harshina Samarasahaya Samithi, told the media on Monday (October 6).

She had been undergoing severe pain even after the removal of the instrument, they claimed, demanding that the government ensure expert medical treatment for her. Though the police had filed a charge sheet in the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court at Kunnamangalam in Kozhikode, indicting the health staff on duty during the surgery, the accused managed to get a stay on the proceedings from the Kerala High Court in July 2024. Mr. Dinesh and Mr. Musthafa claimed that the trial was yet to begin because of the stay. They also alleged that the prosecution’s reluctance to list the case again in the High Court had led to suspicions about attempts to sabotage the case.
