The Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the Madras High Court, has begun its probe into the September 27 stampede that claimed 41 lives at a public meeting addressed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president and actor Vijay in Karur.The team, headed by Inspector-General of Police Asra Garg, visited Karur on Sunday morning and held consultations with the Karur police. The local police handed over all the documents related to the First Information Report (FIR) registered by the Karur Town police against the TVK functionaries.Accompanied by the team members, Mr. Garg visited Velusamypuram on the Karur-Erode Highway, where the stampede took place, and studied the area. He held on-the-spot consultations with the team members. The place, where Mr. Vijay addressed the gathering from atop his campaign vehicle while going to the meeting point, and its background were among the places studied by the team.Mr. Garg later told reporters that the SIT had formally begun its investigation, with the team members visiting the spot. He could not share more details. There were two Superintendents of Police, an Additional Superintendent of Police, two DSPs, and five Inspectors in the team.The police charged TVK Karur (West) district secretary V.P. Mathiyazhagan, party general secretary N. Anand, alias ‘Bussy’ Anand, joint general secretary C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar, and others under Sections 105 (culpable homicide), 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant), and 125 (b) (endangering the life of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, 1982, in connection with the stampede.Mr. Mathiyazhagan and TVK central town secretary M.C.
