CNN’s Scott Jennings’ blunt justification for the harrowing DHS raid at an apartment building in the South Shore of Chicago was met with backlash from other panelists on “NewsNight” Friday, who questioned his empathy.
“Listen Scott, people’s constitutional rights are their constitutional rights,” host Abby Phillip said.
Phillip’s guests, including Jennings, were discussing the violent immigration raid that took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning, where children were separated from their parents and forced out of the apartment building with no clothes on.
One neighbor told CNN that the majority of those he saw handcuffed outside the building were Black, and some were detained for hours. Residents who returned to their homes found them ransacked, with their units left open after agents broke down the doors, a witness told Block Club Chicago.
A DHS spokesperson told the outlet that 37 people had been arrested, and that the building was targeted because it was “known to be frequented” by members of the Tren de Aragua gang “and their associates.”
