The Left-affiliated Students’ Federation of India (SFI) on Friday attacked the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for organising a march at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to mark its centenary year. The SFI said the RSS “did not take prior permission” from the university for holding the march on September 28.“When progressive organisations like ours have to organise any event, we are required to take permission. But the RSS and the ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) are given a free hand,” SFI JNU secretary Parvathy said. She added, “Over a hundred people were present at the public gathering followed by a march to celebrate 100 years of the RSS. Some were from within JNU while others were from outside.”The SFI, in a statement, said, “Allowing the RSS into academic spaces is an assault on the Constitution, culture, and collective memory. Education belongs to the people, not to the RSS.”The SFI said such marches have also been held at the University of Rajasthan and several other educational institutions. However, a member of the RSS-affiliated ABVP said a march is conducted every year in a park inside the JNU, which is a “residential area”, and “does not require prior permission”.
