Colorado investigators are reviewing the death of journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who was originally determined to have died by suicide outside of Aspen in February 2005.

Pitkin County Sheriff Michael Buglione said in a media release there is no new evidence suggesting foul play, yet apparently lingering questions persist.

“We understand the profound impact Hunter S. Thompson had on this community and beyond,” Buglione said in a statement. “By bringing in an outside agency for a fresh look, we hope to provide a definitive and transparent review that may offer peace of mind to his family and the public.”

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said it’s conducting the case review at the request of Thompson’s widow, Anita Thompson.

Thompson was 67 at the time of his death.
