Four people were injured today after a car was driven at members of the public and a man was stabbed outside a synagogue before the suspect was shot by police.

Armed officers descended on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall as members of the Jewish community observed Yom Kippur.

Yom Kippur is seen as the holiest day in the Jewish calendar - similar to Christmas Day for Christians - and is a time when synagogues are usually particularly busy.

The Community Security Trust, which monitors antisemitism, believes sentiment towards Israel is influencing and driving contemporary anti-Jewish discourse.

The group said there were more than 1,500 antisemitic incidents across the UK in the first half of this year amid mounting fears for the safety of the Jewish population.
