Aid ship Mikeno approached the coast of besieged Gaza on Thursday morning, leading dozens of other Global Sumud Flotilla vessels that had broken through an Israeli navy operation overnight.

The Global Sumud Flotilla said 13 ships had been intercepted in the Mediterranean, while around 30 continued their journey. "We continue sailing through the Mediterranean to break the siege on Gaza," a spokesman said early Thursday in a video posted on Instagram.

Earlier, the Israeli navy illegally intercepted several boats and detained over 223 activists on board. Among the hundreds of crew members was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), involving around 45 vessels carrying politicians and activists, including Thunberg, left Spain last month, aiming to break Israel's blockade of the Palestinian territory, where the United Nations says famine has set in.

The Israeli navy intercepted the flotilla on Wednesday after warning it against entering waters it claims fall under its blockade, with Thunberg's ship among those stopped from going further.
