The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has disrupted normal life in southern Odisha, with heavy rains washing away roads and bridges on Thursday (October 2, 2025).The impact of heavy rainfall was severe in Gajapati and Rayagada districts, which fall under the Eastern Ghats mountain range. Landslides were reported in Gajapati, Rayagada, and Koraput, disrupting vehicular movement on roads and railway tracks. In Rayagada district, a father-son duo went missing after being reportedly buried under debris during a landslide.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heavy rain in 17 out of Odisha’s 30 districts through Thursday night. According to its bulletin, the deep depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwest at 18 km per hour and was centered over the region. It is expected to continue in the same direction and cross the Odisha–Andhra Pradesh coasts near Gopalpur by the evening of October 2, 2025.Bahanga in Balasore district recorded the highest rainfall of 110 mm in the 24 hours ending Thursday morning, while four other places in Balasore received more than 90 mm. Heavy rain was also recorded in Puri, Keonjhar, and Jajpur districts.Incessant rain triggered landslides in various parts of mountainous Gajapati district, swelling the Sankha, Ghodasala, and Harabhangi rivers. The Ghodasala bridge was swept away by the river’s strong current, cutting off road connectivity between R. Udaygiri and Nuagada.With the Harabhangi river overflowing, transport along National Highway 326 between Rayagada and Berhampur came to a standstill. Several remote areas in Gajapati, Rayagada, and Koraput were cut off from the rest of the State.Railway services were also hit. Boulders rolled onto the tracks between Rayagada and Koraput, disrupting train movement near Lada Railway Station, while rainwater overflowed onto tracks near Bhalumaska station in Rayagada.
