At the height of Covid, Michelle Mone took a break from posting Instagram shots of her luxury homes, exotic holidays, and designer dress or bikini collections to address a topic close to her heart.
'I want to take a step back and say thank you to the NHS,' she told followers. 'Thank you to every doctor for braving the front line… Thank you to every nurse… Thank you to the cleaners for ensuring levels of hygiene are perfectly maintained… You represent the absolute finest of humanity!'
It was a typically saccharine remark by the Scottish entrepreneur, whose gift for brassy self-promotion had taken her from a Glasgow tenement to the House of Lords, jollifying magazine covers and chat-show sofas and gaining an OBE for 'services to the lingerie industry' along the way.
Baroness Mone of Mayfair, as she is officially known, had days earlier graced the pages of Hello! magazine, regaling readers with details of her wedding to Doug Barrowman, a portly business tycoon from the Isle of Man.
The event, which culminated in a 'sumptuous reception' at which guests were served lobster, sea-bass, beef, washed down with 'fine wines and champagne' plus a 'spectacular seven-tier cake, with multi-flavoured layers embellished with a gold D and M' was entirely on brand for the well-upholstered couple, whose assets included six homes, 15 cars (including a pair of Ferraris), and a Cessna private jet, plus a £10million, 135ft yacht named the 'Lady M'.
