Vice President JD Vance admitted “pain” will result from the federal government shutdown, but said Republicans don’t want to “lay anybody off” amid their standoff with Democrats.
The vice president appeared on “CBS Mornings” on Wednesday just hours after the start of the impasse that will see hundreds of thousands of federal workers go home while others, including active-duty troops, will have to work without pay.
During the interview, Vance used a misleading talking point about immigrants to blame “far-left” Democrats who “decided to shut down the people’s government.”
“We don’t want to lay anybody off, but what we do want to do is make sure that as much of the essential services of government remain [as] functional as possible,” he said.
He added, “There is going to be some pain. And there’s necessarily going to be some pain because Senate Democrats refuse to open the government.”
