Middle-class shoplifters who live in nice houses and have well-paid, professional jobs are increasingly targeting high-end shops “for the thrill”, police have said.

In Cambridgeshire, shoplifting cases have increased by nearly a quarter this year, with the force saying many thefts were carried out by older, affluent people who owned expensive houses.

Cambridgeshire police released CCTV footage of thieves targeting John Lewis, with videos showing a mother and daughter taking their time to hide clothes in handbags; a woman dropping perfume into an already full shopping bag; and another woman in the bra and lingerie section putting items in her bag.
