The Australian native bird initially gained significant popularity, with residents and visitors flocking to see it, making it "more popular than William Shakespeare" locally. Cyril Bennis, Stratford-Upon-Avon's swan warden for 45 years, captured the swan after it started muscling in on mute swan territory, kicking out a male and its cygnet, and attempting to drown other swans. Mr Bennis stated the removal was necessary to protect the town's approximately 60 native mute swans and prevent any unwanted integration or harm. The black swan is currently being held in a local park and will be relocated to the Dawlish Waterfowl Centre in Devon, restoring peace to the river.
