Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Scores of people on a Royal Caribbean cruise reportedly fell ill with norovirus, prompting CDC efforts to contain the ship's outbreak.

More than 70 of 1,874 passengers and one crew member of 883 on board Serenade of the Seas, which departed San Diego nearly two weeks ago on the 19th, reported "being ill during the voyage" on the way to its final destination in Miami on Thursday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"The health and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit are our top priority," a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Group told NBC News.

The norovirus is a contagious virus more colloquially known as the "stomach flu" that causes vomiting and diarrhea, according to the CDC. It commonly is spread by contaminated food, water or exposed surfaces.
