The Wall Street Journal warned that President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade war with China is causing serious “suffering” for American farmers, particularly soybean producers whose largest export market has “collapsed.”

The newspaper’s conservative editorial board also cast doubt on the Trump administration’s plan to subsidize farmers with tariff revenue until “the tariffs kick in to their benefit,” as Trump himself has vowed.

The Treasury “will be making payouts for a long time,” predicted the Journal, which has become a relentless critic of Trump’s trade policies.
