he news that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have separated after 19 years together has come as a shock to friends and fans alike. Their anniversary was in June, and only in May they stood together on the red carpet at the Academy of Country Music Awards in Texas, her looking at him adoringly and laying her hand on his heart.

In spite of Hollywood marriages tending to be shortish lived and rarely for the long haul, this particular union seemed to have a lot going for it and we, the curious public, had them marked as lifers: sensible, grown-up creative types who were prepared to put in the necessary hard work. To hear that at the age of 58 and 57 and after nearly two decades together they have decided to call it a day is surprising and sad. We thought they had cracked it, like Julia Roberts and Daniel Moder. The megastar actress and the loving guy who is happy to be in her shadow, most of the time.
