Constance Marten, the convicted killer and wealthy heiress, and her boyfriend, Mark Gordon, are in line to receive a total of more than £1 million in legal aid.

Marten, who earlier this month was jailed for 14 years for the manslaughter of her newborn daughter, was granted legal aid for her two criminal trials and family court hearings relating to her four older children, despite having a £2.4 million trust fund.

Marten, whose father was a page to the late Queen and whose grandmother was a friend of Princess Margaret, has boasted to fellow inmates that she will be able to access the trust fund in two years when she turns 40, her sentencing hearing was told.

Figures released under freedom of information laws show the couple have already claimed more than £400,000 in legal aid.

Lawyers are yet to put in their final court bill, which is expected to exceed £600,000.
