Rachel Reeves has urged Labour voters to keep the faith as she signalled further tax rises in the coming budget.

In her speech to the Labour conference the chancellor warned that the UK was still facing “harsh global headwinds” and said she would not take “risks” with economic stability.

Branding Nigel Farage a “threat to our way of life”, the chancellor sought to present Labour as the party to be trusted on national security and the economy.

She also launched an attack on Andy Burnham, accusing the Greater Manchester mayor of peddling the “dangerous” idea that the government could increase borrowing as she paved the way for a major tax-raising budget to balance the books.
