President Donald Trump has reportedly decided to join Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth’s meeting this week with the country’s top generals in Virginia, upping the already existing security concerns over the unusual event.A planning document sent Saturday and viewed by The Washington Post, who first reported on the development, said that the White House confirmed Trump will attend Hegseth’s speech at the massive gathering on Tuesday. The White House did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment, though Trump has previously praised the decision to call the meeting. Last week, Hegseth ordered hundreds of senior U.S. military leaders from around the world to attend Tuesday’s event at the Marine base in Quantico, revealing little if any details on the reason for the bizarre meeting. The opacity initially raised concerns that Hegseth called the meeting to inform the generals of their firings or demotions, given that the defense secretary earlier this year ordered the active duty military to cut 20% of its four-star general officers.According to the Post, Hegseth is gathering the high-level officers so he can give a somewhat brief speech about new military standards that help restore what he calls the “warrior ethos.” It’s unclear if Trump will deliver his own speech ― a move that could upstage his defense secretary. While it’s not unusual for defense secretaries to meet with top generals, it is unprecedented to gather hundreds of high-ranking military officers at one publicly known location. Security concerns over that vulnerability are compounded by the fact that Tuesday marks the end of the fiscal year, meaning top officials flown and housed by the Pentagon could be stranded from their units if the government shuts down. Those existing security concerns will be even more exacerbated by Trump’s reported decision to attend, with the Post reporting that Pentagon offices were told the development will “significantly change the security posture” of Hegseth’s speech. If the president does attend, then the Secret Service will be in charge of event security.Close
