A yachting enthusiast who stabbed his ex-wife to death at the graveside of their late son claimed he only took a 12-inch kitchen knife to the cemetery with him to 'cut flowers', a court heard today.Martin Suter, 68, from Lee on Solent, Hampshire, said he did not bring the secateurs he would usually use because they would 'crush' the stalks of the sunflowers he had brought with him.The court previously heard that Suter killed his 'kindhearted' ex-wife Ann Blackwood, 71, with a kitchen knife and a pair of scissors she had taken to trim memorial flowers on what would have been their son's 36th birthday.Afterwards, he called the police and told operatives 'I have just killed by ex-wife' before blaming her for the suicide of his son, who took his own life in 2003.A trial of issue, or newton hearing, at Portsmouth Crown Court was told that he 'laid in wait' for the arrival of Ms Blackwood at Crofton Cemetery in Stubbington, Hampshire, for several hours on July 24, 2023, before launching the fatal attack. The hearing seeks to determine two matters - the first being whether Suter took the knife with the intention of killing Ms Blackwood, and the second determining whether he intended to murder his ex-wife or commit grievous bodily harm. Today, the court heard evidence from psychologist Dr Paul Beckley, who interviewed Suter in prison last year.In a report read out by the prosecution team, Dr Beckley said: 'On the morning of 24th of July, which would have been Christopher's 36th birthday, he killed his ex-wife Ann Suter at the graveside of their late son. Martin Suter (pictured), 68, pleaded guilty to the murder of his sailor ex-wife after stabbing her to death at the graveyard where their late son is buried 'Kindhearted' Ann Blackwood, 71, was killed on the birthday of the couple's late son, Christopher, who died aged 15 more than 20 years ago'He had driven to the cemetery to place flowers at his late son's graveside and had on his person a large knife taken from his kitchen knife block.'I asked him why he had the knife on him and gave an account similar to previous reports that he had taken it to cut flowers.'Dr Beckley said Suter claimed he had brought sunflowers with him and did not use the secateurs he would normally use because they would 'crush the sunflower stalks'.He told him he had previously used a knife for this purpose, but not the kitchen knife he had taken with him that day.Dr Beckley also said Suter mentioned arriving at around 10am and 'staying for several hours in his car'.Suter previously pleaded guilty to the murder of Ms Blackwood.Jodie Mittell KC, representing Suter, told today's hearing: 'There is no evidence to be called on behalf of the defendant.'Prosecutor Robert O'Sullivan KC had previously told the hearing that Suter left his home at around 10:29am on July 24, 2023.Suter (pictured) repeatedly stabbed Ms Blackwood in a brutal attack after he 'laid in wait' for her at the Crofton Cemetery in Stubbington Police at the scene of the attack at Crofton Cemetery in Stubbington, where Suter's son is buriedHe drove his burgundy Mazda MX-5 Sports car to the cemetery where he 'laid in wait' for the arrival of Ms Blackwood for almost five hours, who he 'rightly anticipated' would visit the grave that day.The court heard that Ms Blackwood arrived by bicycle at the cemetery at 3:30pm and while walking to the grave on foot, Suter used the kitchen knife to stab her in the back. The court heard the blade had broken off from the handle, and he then 'stabbed her in the neck with scissors'.The prosecutor said these scissors belonged to Ms Blackwood, and she had brought them with her to cut the orange roses she had 'intended to leave on her son's grave'.Some minutes later, Suter called 999 and said 'I have just murdered someone' and 'I have just killed by ex-wife, I have stabbed her to death'.Shortly after this phone call with the police, Suter phoned his second wife Diane Suter and told her that he had 'just murdered Ann' and that he 'finished her off' with a pair of scissors. The police arrived and Suter was arrested and taken to the police station.A postmortem examination revealed Ms Blackwood had at least 19 stab wounds in her neck from the scissors.Prosecutors do not know if the scissors were open or closed when they caused the wounds.Suter also faced a separate trial in Manchester last year for historic abuse of a young girl and was convicted of indecently assaulting a girl under 14. The judge will make a ruling on the newton hearing in November. For free confidential support, call Samaritans on 116 123, visit samaritans.org or visit www.thecalmzone.net/get-support
