Volodymyr Zelensky has asked Donald Trump to supply Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles in a 'massively positive' private meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations. The Ukrainian President told his American counterpart that the state-of-the-art weapons system could finally force Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table to discuss peace.Several sources told The Telegraph that the appeal was made during what insiders described as a 'massively positive' encounter between the two world leaders. In an interview afterwards, Zelensky revealed that Trump appeared open to his request for the long-range cruise missile, which would place Moscow within Kyiv's reach. It comes as the Ukrainian President defiantly told Axios that NATO countries are 'afraid' of Russia and their response to recent Kremlin drone and jet incursions has been 'weak.'Separately, diplomatic figures said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged European partners to interpret Trump's shift in tone on Ukraine 'as positive as possible'.He also reportedly told them the president is 'really angry' with Putin for ignoring his efforts to end the three-and-a-half year war.It remains unclear whether Zelensky will succeed in persuading Washington to provide Tomahawks - which have a range of up to 1,500miles and carry a 450kg warhead, making them vastly more effective than any similar long-range weapon previously donate to Kyiv. But this week, in a sign of growing confidence, Zelensky told Axios that Trump had said 'we will work on it'.Trump id also understood to have struck a deal with European governments under which they would foot the bill for US-made weapons supplied to Ukraine. The Ukrainian president made clear that his forces would be prepared to target the Kremlin if they obtained the weapons - claiming he has tacit support from Trump for strikes inside Russia if Moscow launches similar attacks.'If they attack our energy, President Trump supports that we can answer on energy,' Zelensky said.Security experts in Kyiv argue the request is both logical and inevitable. Serhii Kuzan, chairman of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre and a former defence ministry adviser, said: 'The logic is simple and understandable. 'If Russia has long-range cruise missiles, then Ukraine must have similar capabilities to strike targets at the same depths.'He added: 'If anyone says that this is impossible, let me remind you, quite recently we were denied tanks and the supply of F-16s took a long time to agree. 'Our goal remains uncharged: all available types of weapons must be delivered to Ukraine as soon as possible.'It comes just a day after drones were spotted flying over four airports in Denmark sparking fresh fears that Putin may be testing NATO defences.
