The Calcutta High Court on Thursday (September 25, 2025) sought a report from the West Bengal government, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Calcutta Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) on the rainfall in the city on Tuesday (September 23) morning, which resulted in multiple deaths.A Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court, of Acting Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Apurba Singh Roy, directed the CESC to submit a report on the incidents of electrocution. The Bench directed the KMC to file a report on what steps it has taken regarding the city’s drainage system, and the State government was directed to submit a report on the compensation to the kin of deceased.West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and blamed CESC for the deaths due to electrocution. Ms. Banerjee had put the number of deceased to nine, which included eight deaths in Kolkata. The matter will come up for hearing again on November 7“From the All India lawyers Union we had sent a letter to the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on the issue of water logging and electrocution death. The Court has issued notice to CESC, West Bengal government and KMC,” advocate Shamim Ahmed told media persons.Even after 48 hours of deluge certain areas in Kolkata remained waterlogged and without power supply. Areas of Kolkata like Mandeville Garden in Ballygunge and Santoshpur remained flooded and the residents had to cope up without electricity supply for the past three days.Residents of Utsav Utsarg Apartment in Ward No. 109 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation have been left without power since Tuesday morning. On Thursday (September 25, 2025), after attempts were made to pump water out from the compound of nearby Udita Apartment, the water entered Utsav Utsarg apartment complex, meant for the low-income and mid-income group families.“We have elderly persons at our home and KMC cannot restore power unless the waters are pumped out. The caregivers are also unable to come to the aid of the elderly which has exacerbated our ordeal,” a resident of Utsav Utsarg Apartment said. The local councillor Ananya Banerjee did not respond to calls. The rainfall between the night of September 22 and 23 also caused severe damage to the Durga Puja festival in the city.State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Samik Bhattacharya also visited areas which were water logged and had reported electrocution deaths. “Another municipal worker dies in stagnant water! In the Rajpur Sonarpur Municipality area, this person died due to suffocation in the filthy stagnant water of the drain,” the West Bengal BJP posted on social media. The BJP leadership also raised objections to a video of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, where she is breaking into a dandia dance while inaugurating Durga Puja. While inaugurating a Durga Puja, Ms. Banerjee once again raised the issue of torrential rains earlier this week and blamed the Centre for non-dredging of Farakka Barrage for the water logging in Kolkata.
