Following allegations of running schools during Dasara (mid-term) holidays and a few right wing outfits barging into schools and forcing suspension of classes in institutions run by Christian bodies, representatives of such institutions met Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu G.R.J. here on Wednesday with a clarification that they have not violated any order. The representatives met the Deputy Commissioner a day after some activists affiliated to Sri Ram Sene staged protests in front of the institutions run by Christian bodies and associations and also in front of the office of the Deputy Director of Public Instruction in Dharwad demanding strict implementation of Dasara holidays. The activists also demanded that the grant-in aid given to such institutions should be stopped as they failed to adhere to the Dasara holidays order.Airing their grievances before the Deputy Commissioner, the representatives clarified that they have not violated any order. They said that for over four decades, they have been adjusting the Dasara holidays with Christmas holidays and have not violated any government rules.Referring to the objection by a few organisations that they have violated the Government Order on Dasara holidays, they said that the Commissioner of the Department of School Education has permitted the schools to adjust the Dasara holidays with the holidays they grant during Christmas.Submitting a memorandum, they said that despite the higher officials giving approval for holiday adjustment, the Dharwad City Block Education Officer (BEO) has claimed that Christian schools have not submitted any proposal regarding Christmas holidays and ordered for immediate suspension of classes and examinations. They also warned that they will be forced to launch an agitation if vested interests are allowed to damage the academic system and functioning of schools.Even as the representatives of the Christian institutions made a representation before the Deputy Commissioner on Wednesday, another incident of classes being disrupted was reported from Hubballi.Members of right wing activists barged into the Sacred Heart Convent School at Keshwapur in Hubballi and argued with the school authorities over classes being conducted during the Dasara festival. The issue was resolved after the police authorities intervened. Published - September 25, 2025 10:31 pm IST
