Amid videos of farmers in Chitrakoot and other districts in Uttar Pradesh seen standing in long queues to obtain fertilizers and facing severe difficulties due to its shortage, the Opposition on Thursday (September 25, 2025) said farmers across the State are in distress due to the BJP government’s failed policies with the lack of timely availability of fertilizers, seeds and essential resources.‘Hours queuing up’In the viral videos, farmers were seen standing in long queues for hours and failing to receive the fertilizers and seeds due to shortage. “I have been standing for over five hours since morning, but of no help. At many Cooperative Society centres and dealer shops, artificial hoarding and black marketing is exacerbating the crisis. We do not know where the fertilizer is going,” a farmer told a media person at Aichwara in Chitrakoot district.“The farmers across Uttar Pradesh are in dire straits due to the BJP government’s failed policies with the lack of timely availability of fertilizers, seeds and essential resources adversely affecting their crops and livelihoods. This government is anti-farmer to the core. On the one hand, the Minister is claiming no shortage and on the other we are seeing such visuals of long queues. Yogi [Adityanath] government must address the situation with utmost sincerity,” said Anil Yadav, a senior U.P. Congress leader.Balram Pratap Singh, a farmer from Lucknow, said at some places, lower-level officials are involved in helping some people with vested interests leading to long queues and unfulfilled demands of farmers. “The problem is much to do with some junior level officials and dealers in some districts, who are creating hindrance. Some black marketers are hoarding fertilizers and seeds, supplying it to Nepal, it is also leading to problems,” he added.Unacceptable: CongressUttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai urged the government to resolved the crisis immediately alleging that fertilizer meant for U.P. farmers are sold at high prices in Nepal. “The government is advertising that fertilizer is available for farmers, but for collecting order/ fertilizer, our farmer brothers have to stand for hours, this is unacceptable. The fact is fertilizer meant for our farmers in U.P. are sold in Nepal at high prices. It should be checked and government must provide timely support to our farmers. I have written to the Chief Minister over the issue in the past urging immediate intervention,” Mr. Rai told The Hindu. Published - September 25, 2025 10:20 pm IST
